Yesterday Skype announced the launch of its SIP trunking equivalent service Skype Connect. The full press release and information can be found at http://blogs.skype.com/business/2010/08/skype_connect_10_is_officially.html.

Having read the press release recently a couple of things were interesting, they announced with a set of pre approved PBX vendors: Cisco, Siemens, Shoretel, Spxecs & gateways from Audiocodes, Grandstream & Vosky.  Obviously this is a reasonable start but depending on the market they are looking to target the absence of Avaya, Panasonic or Mitel maybe an issue. Also a industry insider tells me they are asking a largish fee if you want to test your equipment with the service.

Also the datasheets state there is still no support for emergency services, i guess this will lead to some interesting discussions with potential competitors & the regulators. As this is clearly a service competing with business communication service providers who are bound by regulation to deliver 999 types services.

What is interesting is the potential integration between this service and the ever increasing traditional skype user base. The demo on the site talks about integration with call me buttons etc  which could be very attractive to certain segments such as “travel” etc.

I guess one of the interesting ongoing challenges that Skype will have, is what is the best channel to sell this product through  and how to handle the onsite installation and integration issues, which will arise with all but the highly technical end customer.

We will however continue to follow this story with a lot of interest.
