Before Christmas I had the pleasure of interviewing Genband executives, for our new Hosted VoIP & SIP trunking reports published at end of January. I have not had a chance to spend any serious time studying Genbands progress since they acquired Nortel CVAS in the summer. In short I was very impressed by their emerging strategy; they have grasped the requirement to have a truly integrated product story for the carrier, an area that Nortel had previously fallen down on.

They have produced a strategy and road map that clearly positions the application engines as part of a family, and as an integrated offering with their high class switching engines. So the A2 platform (previously known as AP5200) know works in an integrated manner with the C20 (previously positioned as the Cs2k). Also these different servers and switches can all be delivered in one hardware form factor called “Genius”. This integrated application and hardware story could be very powerfull to carriers, who tell illume that they are trying to reduce both the Opex and Capex costs of running multiple platforms.

So the integration of the application engines the switching and the traditional elements of Genbands portfolio such as Gateways, session border controllers should make a compelling proposition to the carrier. Certain elements of the applications still need to be delivered by third parties, which may be a slight inhibitor but the integrated proposition should prove very powerfull.

So in a year where a lot of the industry talk, has been about the impending domination of Broadsoft and the potential of Cisco emerging with a stronger carrier position, I think Genband are in a strong position to build on the significant market share position they gained by purchasing Nortel. I exspect some significant progress in customer acquisition and up sell development in the coming year, as customers start to buy into the integrated proposition.  We will discuss the development of the applications and switching market in more detail in our Hosted VoIP & SIP Trunking market reports which will be published at the end of January.
